HISTORY OF THE MINGENEW MIDWEST EXPO
1983 - HOW THE MINGENEW MIDWEST EXPO HAD IT'S BIRTH
from "The Vision - the History of the Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo (2007)
One of the dedicated Mingenew Lions (Bob Paskins), while residing in Sydney, had travelled to Orange to attend the Orange Field Day. He suggested that it would be expedient to conduct a machinery field day in Mingenew. For a number of dinner meetings, this was the main topic of discussion.
The ethic would be to create an "Exposition" which included all the necessary agricultural machinery exhibits and other supporting tools of trade, with allied industries to meet as a one-stop-shop window for the Midwest populations to examine exhibits for possible purchase, or follow up at a later date with the retailer or dealer to conclude the purchase. To include agencies, financial institutions, marketing bodies and purveyors of information vital to the productivity of the farmer. To add to the mix, supportive information and educational facets for the family - that the "Exposition" would become a family affair, for the Farmer and his family to attend.
Early in 1983, astute Lions invited their Lions ladies to a Champagne Breakfast to discuss the proposal of this "Exposition". They recognised that to succeed, those who were to become the main movers and shakers of this Exposition needed the support of their partners. The partners would be required to assist with whatever support was necessary, in those first initial weeks leading up to the scheduled day chosen. Friday 23rd September 1983.
Former Lions Geoff Powell and Colin Bartlett have described how, in those first initial stages throughout 1983 the "Exposition" was molded and melded. Finally it was generally agreed by all concerned; that a successful day, financially and socially, had been conducted!
Affairs Feminine
At the very conception of the Mingenew Midwest Expo it was decided to have a "Fashion Parade" for the female attendees - inspired by the fashion parade at the Dowerin Field Day, the Lions Ladies in conjunction with the Australian Wool Board put on the first fashion parade which graced the catwalk (back of Lion Malcolm McKay's semi trailer) with a dressing of red carpet from the Australian Wool Board.
By 1990, a group of Mingenew ladies with a will to improve events for lady patrons were given blessing from the Lions Club & Expo Committee to begin exploring methods to promote the fashion parade
